Air Layering- This is a way to get thick knarled old trunked trees in no time. The way to do this is to cut the bark down to the cumbium layer ( the layer after the green layer) then place spagum moss on the expossed cut and wrap with plastic Keep it moist and in a year there should be roots. Cut the branch off and place in a trainig pot to style to your desire.
Cuttings - The way to start bonsai without the trees seed, it knocks about a year after the seed starts to grow. The way to start cuttings is to cut a branch max being 6 inches.Then puting it in soil and waiting for roots to form.
Seeds - Are usually a good place to start if you have the patience. The advantage is the satisfaction of growing your tree from scratch. Another advantage is choosing whatever style of tree you want and watching it unfold infront of you. Of course it will be a few years before you have anything to work with but a few years in a training pot should do the trick.
