The Bonsai School Sick bonsai
Some bonsai might look like thier sick or just doing bad. Theirs really no way of telling exactly whats wrong with it. These sick bonsai are usually the ones that are over watered. This will bring on browning tips on the leaves. And root rot.
Underwatering- this will also cause death.Water bonsai when the soil looks dry stick your finger in the soil to see humidity.
Shriveling leaves- On your bonsai could be several things. You could be watering in the middle of the day OVER THE FOLIAGE wich would cause it. Or watering over the Foliage when its Windy can cause it too this will only happen on brod leaf trees like maples and azaleas. If this occurs stop watering foliage from then on and water only the soil then the new leaves shall emerdge.
Aphids or balck fly-Blackfly are usually found in new shoots on bonsai or because your soil is to organic. How to get rid of these flies is fairly easy. You should go to your local garden center and get insectacide that will get rid of them.
Adelgids-This is a white fungus on your tree it likes mostly all pines and also spruce and larch. Get rid of it by spraying it with insecticide.
Red Spider Mite-You may spot little red dots that move on your tree. These are spider mites it is very hard to see them for they are very tiny. You can get rid of them by washing off the spiders with a hose. Insectiside may not work for they are small. But you mays still try it.
Long horned beetle- Are one of the worst bugs on bonsai in North America and in Europe they lay eggs on diciduos trees and burrow into the wood. They arent hard to identify they have shiny backs and white spots. You can just squash them if found.
Root Aphids-There like black fly but white and live in the root systems of trees.Quickly apply insecticied as soon as possible.
Vine Weevils-They look black and have long antanae if spotted on your tree remove. If found in summer spray tree because they lay eggs in the tree.
Fungus- Wooly fuzzy looking circle on the wood of your tree.Or on the leaves. If found rub off with alchohol or lysol.
White Fly-Prey mainly on tropical bonsai they may also attract fungus and make leaves fall off and turn yellow.
One of the things beginners dont understand most of the bonsai they buy are alredy dead this is usually a juniper bonsai. They might buy them from the mall or local store. BIG MISTAKE !!! Usually thier alredy dead. Unfortunatley theres only one way to tell scrathing the bark.Or if its leaves or needles fall of by the touch.
