Soil- In bonsai we usually use a free draining soil. Try the soils page in the web bar also try DallasBonsai in the links to find the absolute best quality soil.
Watering- Usually since we have free draining soil when we get to the summer you will usually need to water everyday recomended in afternoon hours when the sun is set. Watering from over head is best it discourages bugs from taking inhabitance on your tree and releases gases from the tree the only time you should not water the whole tree is when it has flowers, or when it is a brod leafed tree and its summer time. This will make them wilt and rot away. If your bonsai does have flowers,or if it is a broad leaf water the soil and when the flowers dry take them off. If your not in summer and you have broad leafed trees it should be fine to water the whole tree. ( if it is not windy)
Sun- Bonsai as you now know are no ordinary plant theyre very unique. And if left to the harsh sun in summer will burn. These are the brod leaf bonsai wich include all maples and azalea and some other diciduous bonsai. You can stop the trees from burning by alowing some sun and then shade or simpler ways include hanging shade cloth over them. The shade cloth should be 50% to 60 % shade. The trees that can tolerate the sun are called conifers these need no protection from the sun and will thrive in it. they include all junipers, pine, And sone evergreens like bouganvillea.
Fertilizer- This is fundamental to a bonsais growth. It should be added every growing season for a good growth spurt. Make sure you get the fertilizer with the 3 numbers on the bag as 10-12-10 or 10-12-12. Any variation between those numbers will do. These numbers on the bag are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Make sure you dont add to much. A quick sprinkle over the top of the soil will do for the whole summer. After the fertilizer is gone and the tree has stopped growing or started to lessen its growth do to the coming of fall do not add any more. Unless the fertilizer youll add has no nitrogen level it should say 0-10-12 or 0-12-10.
. Repoting- When a tree is root bound it needs to be repoted. Do this in winter or early spring only! Lift it from its pot comb the roots so theyre all facing down then cut about fifty percent Of the roots add new soil and water in straight away. Make sure you get all the organic soil out or it can rot the roots in the future.
Were to place-Most bonsai need outdoors living only tropicals will be allowed indoors so find out what yours is if you dont know email me a picture or if you have any questions to.
