This is a special piece of information which will teach you how to take care of your bonsai at any time of the year. This is for the western part of the world. Sorry all you easterners its comming soon!!!

 

January

Watering – Because it is so cold watering shouldn’t be done every day but do check everyday.


Fertilizing- No fertilizer.

Spraying – Deciduous trees should be sprayed with lime sulphur or dormant spray.

Shaping – This is the perfect time to reshape deciduous trees but not to drastic as branches can be very brittle.

Transplanting –Yes

Grafting – Good time for pines and other conifers

 

February

Fertilizer – None

Pruning – A good month for pruning any fruit bearing bonsai the tree should blossom first but prune as soon as possible for healthiest fruits possible.

Cuttings – From February and through may is the best time to start cuttings

Grafting - On deciduous should start this month this is the last month to graft pines and conifers.

Transplanting – Yes

 

March

Watering – Most deciduous trees are at a time of growth more water should be added.

Trimming – This month all flowering bonsai will be in bloom and all flowers should be removed before they die.

Fertilizer – Still too early.

Transplanting – Yes

Cuttings – Still a good time for cuttings

Grafting – Best time to start grafting deciduous trees

 

April

Location – Make sure to rotate bonsai so each one can have recommended sun or else one side will weaken as the other strives.

Watering- Pines when it is hot should not be given to much water this will keep the needles short and strong.

Trimming – Trim back the buds on deciduous trees to tree leaves on older let it harden then trim.

Grafting - April is the best time to graft any deciduous trees.

Transplanting-No

Fertilizer – April is the best time to fertilize do not fertilize berry or fruit trees yet.

Spraying- When new buds appear watch for aphids and worms don’t spray with strong fungicide.

 

May

Location – Keep the rotation of the trees as the weather gets warmer you should put maple elm zelcova in a less sunny area (get shade cloth)

Watering – Start giving more water to the trees.

Trimming – Same as may start pinching cypress and juniper for dense foliage do not cut junipers with shears as they will brown pines should be candled .

Wiring - Check the wire don’t let it cut into the wood.

Transplanting – None

Fertilizer – Deciduous trees should be fertilized. Unless it has its shape finished as in finished bonsai. Evergreens only once a year.

Spraying – Mildew will start forming this month.


June

Location- Keep rotating; guard against sun (shade cloth)

Watering – Water the benches for more humidity .

Trimming – June is the month for defoliating .

Shaping – Dont wire new green shoots instead tie them down.

Feeding – June is the month to feed.

Transplanting – June is a good time to transplant azalea and pine.

 

July

Location – keep rotating bonsai

Watering – Water in after noon or early morning not at mid day.

Fertilizer – Yes

Trimming – Take off all flowers from your tree.

Transplanting – None

Spraying – Yes

Air layering – Yes

 

August

Location – Keep rotating bonsai on their shelves.

Watering – This is time when you can take vacations . more water.

Trimming – Growth has stopped

Wiring – Smaller new branches can now be bent

Fertilizer – Yes

Transplanting – No

 

 

September

Location – If premature leaf drop happens put bonsai in a cool spot

Watering – Now that the growing season is stopping bonsai need less water.

Trimming – Long shoots on "new" bonsai should be cut back.

Fertilizer – Half a normal dose can be given to a "new" bonsai .

Transplanting – Only slight root pruning.

 

October

Location – Stop rotating bonsai that have started going deciduous should be guarded from the hot in case of buds appear

Watering – Start lessoning water.

Trimming – Trim pines and remove any dead needles and seed pods fruit and berries from all the trees.

Unwiring - This month for unwiring deciduous trees

Fertilizing – Very little just for dormancy strength not for growth

Transplanting – No

 

November

Locations – Guard against hot days cold spells cold winds.

Watering – Less water don’t let the bonsai dry out.

Trimming – Remove any leaves left on deciduous trees remove any needles that have died on pines and tips of junipers.

Training – Some branches may be very brittle.

Fertilizer – None

Transplanting – Yes

 

December

Location – Guard against any and all freak weather

Watering – Keep a good eye on trees don’t let it dry out.

Trimming – Can be done under caution

Fertilizer – None

Transplanting – Yes

Grafting – None
